Professional Headshots for Lawyers and Law Firms in Chicago and Suburbs
Your headshot is often the first impression a potential client sees. Before they read your bio, before they call your office, and before they ever sit down with you. For attorneys, that first impression carries real weight. Clients are making trust decisions, sometimes during stressful or vulnerable moments in their lives. A polished, professional headshot signals that you take your work seriously and that you're someone worth trusting.
Whether you're an associate building your reputation, a partner updating firm materials, or an office manager coordinating law firm headshots for your entire legal team, the right photographer makes the process straightforward and the results look exactly as professional as your practice deserves.
I've worked with attorneys and law firms across Chicago and the northwest suburbs, from Algonquin and Schaumburg to Rosemont and the broader Chicagoland area, and I know what it takes to produce headshots that work hard across every platform you use them on.
Outdated Photos Are Costing Your Firm More Than You Think
Before a potential client reads a bio, picks up the phone, or schedules a consultation, they are already forming an opinion based on what they see. If your firm's photos look old, low-quality, or inconsistent, it quietly signals that something is off. Even if the client can't quite put their finger on why.
That matters because clients aren't just hiring legal knowledge. They're hiring for confidence, professionalism, and trust. A firm with current, polished imagery feels established and credible. A firm with outdated or mismatched photos can unintentionally suggest it isn't paying close attention to how it presents itself. And if a firm isn't paying attention to that, what else might it be missing?
Professional photography isn't about vanity. It's about making sure the first impression your firm gives online matches the quality of work you actually do.
What Makes a Good Attorney Headshot?
There's a question that comes up often in the legal marketing world: should an attorney look stern and authoritative, or warm and approachable? According to FindLaw, the answer is clear. Potential clients are more likely to contact a firm if the attorney looks like someone they'd like and trust. People make fast decisions based on likability, and a large part of that decision comes down to a single photo.
That means friendly wins. A small, genuine smile communicates that you're approachable and human. A stern expression might feel powerful from the inside, but to someone who isn't a lawyer, it can read as intimidating. That's not exactly the first impression you want when someone is already nervous about a legal situation.
Your headshot should also reflect your practice area. A family law or elder law attorney may want a softer, more relaxed look. A personal injury attorney might lean into a stronger, more confident expression. Clients coming to you in the aftermath of an accident need to know you'll go to bat for them. A corporate or business attorney will naturally lean more conservative. The goal is to look like yourself, at your professional best, in a way that speaks directly to the clients you want to attract.
And yes, it needs to be a professional photo. A smartphone selfie or an old conference photo cropped down simply won't do the work you need it to do across your website, your firm directory, LinkedIn, and Avvo.
What to Expect from an Individual Attorney Headshot Session
A professional headshot session doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. Before your session, I'll send you my headshot prep guide to look over, so you know exactly what to wear, how to prepare, and what to bring. For attorneys, the general rule is to dress the way you would for an important client meeting. That usually means a well-fitted suit or blazer in a solid, darker color. Avoid busy patterns, loud prints, or anything that will distract from your face.
Most attorneys opt for my Deluxe session, which is up to 90 minutes and includes three fully retouched images. The extra time allows us to try different looks, backdrops, and expressions so you walk away with images that work across multiple platforms and purposes. I also offer a shorter session at up to 45 minutes with one retouched image, which is a great option if you need a quick refresh.
On the day of your session, we'll work through poses and expressions together. Most people aren't used to being in front of a camera, and that's completely fine. My job is to make you comfortable and bring out a natural, confident look. By the end of your session, you'll have images that work across your firm's website, your LinkedIn profile, your Avvo or Martindale listing, and any other platform where clients are looking you up.
Headshot Days for Law Firms
If you're an office manager, firm administrator, or marketing director responsible for keeping your firm's online presence consistent and current, a team headshot day is the most efficient way to get it done.
I come to your office and photograph your entire team on-site, working through attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in back-to-back sessions throughout the day. Everyone gets a consistent look and a consistent background, so your website directory and LinkedIn profiles finally match. No more mismatched photos taken years apart at different places with different lighting.
Turnover is real.
Attorney rosters change. Associates come and go, partners are promoted, and new hires need to get up to speed quickly. A team headshot day gets everyone current at once. And when you bring someone new on board down the road, simply send them to my studio in Algonquin for an individual session. It's a cost-efficient way to add one person without the expense of bringing a photographer back on-site.
Large teams have another option.
For firms with larger teams that have more turnover, composite photography is worth considering. Instead of photographing everyone together in a single group shot, I photograph each person individually and combine them into one cohesive group image. When someone new joins, I photograph them separately and add them to the composite rather than rescheduling the entire group. It keeps your firm's group image current without the logistical headache of getting everyone in the same place at the same time.
Consistency matters for credibility.
When a potential client visits your website and sees ten different headshot styles, it undermines the polished, professional image your firm works hard to maintain. A cohesive set of law firm headshots communicates that your firm is organized and detail-oriented, which is exactly what clients want in a law firm.
It's easier than it sounds.
Most attorneys are in and out in 10 minutes when I am on location. There's no need to coordinate a group shoot, and no disruption to your workday beyond a short block of time per person when going this route.
