Family Photography FAQ
Hi, I’m Carol DeAnda of DeAnda Photography. I photograph family sessions all across the Chicagoland, from the Northwest Suburbs and at my studio in Algonquin, to Chicago and every suburb in between. If you are wondering what to wear, what time to schedule, or what happens if your kids go full chaos mode, you are in the right place!
Booking and Basics
How soon should I book my family portrait session with you?
The sooner the better, especially for September through December. I suggest booking in August for fall and winter sessions so you get your ideal day and time. You can always reach out, even if it is last-minute, since reschedules do happen.
What is a retainer fee or session fee?
A retainer holds your date and time and is non-refundable.
What is included, and why do your sessions and products cost what they cost?
I am priced to give you an excellent experience and consistent results. I have been photographing families full-time for 18 years, and I handle everything from planning help through professional editing and final delivery. Planning Your Session
Where can the photo session take place?
Sessions can take place at your home, outdoors, or in my studio for timeless heirloom-style portraits. If you’re not sure what fits your vibe, tell me what you want your photos to feel like and I will recommend the best option.
What time of day is best?
For outdoor sessions, the best light is typically near sunrise or the last 1 to 2 hours before sunset, but I have know how to shoot is most lighting conditions, and have many locations I can shoot all day in.
Why can’t we book a beach shoot at noon?
Midday sun (especially 11–3 in summer) creates harsh shadows and bright backgrounds that do not photograph the way you see in my portfolio. All of my beach images are taken at sunrise/sunset or on a cloudy day, which gives you that soft, clean look.
Can you help us pick a location?
Yes. I have go-to locations I love, and I will recommend options based on the season, your kids’ ages, and the look you want.
What to Wear
What should we wear?
Start with one “inspiration piece” (a dress, sweater, or color palette you love) and build everyone else around it. Lay everything out together at home, and make sure nothing feels too loud or distracting. Most importantly: wear something that fits well and makes you feel confident.
Should we match outfits?
Coordinating is better than matching. Think “go together” not “everyone in the same thing.”
Kids, Weather, and Real Life
What if my kids don’t cooperate?
That is normal. I keep things moving, I do not expect kids to be perfect, and I work fast once we have their attention. The goal is real connection, not forced smiles. So don’t worry, let me handle wrangling the kids, I promise I have seen it all and nothing at this point phases me!
What if it rains or the weather is awful?
We will make a plan. Depending on the session type, we can reschedule, pivot to a more protected location, or move indoors. I don’t make the call usually though untill the day of the session since the weather in Illinois can be unpredictable and change on a dime.
Delivery and Products
How long until I can see my photos?
Portrait and family sessions are delivered within two weeks. I often deliver sooner when possible.
Why don’t I get to see every single photo you took?
I cull your images so you only see the best of each setup with great expressions and open eyes. You will not get mid-blink photos. This is part of how I keep quality high and your gallery enjoyable to view. I promise, you don’t want the ones that aren’t in your gallery.
Do you offer digitals, albums, prints, and wall art?
Yes. I offer it all, and I can help you choose what fits your home so your photos actually get enjoyed.
How long is our gallery available online?
Your online gallery will be available for at least one month.
Policies
Can we include grandparents or extended family?
Yes, extended family sessions are available and include extra time. Let me know your group size and I will recommend the best option.
What happens if we need to reschedule?
Life happens. Just reach out as soon as you possibly can, the more notice I have the better as I usually have a wait list, espeically in busy months.
