How Often Should You Update Your Professional Headshot?
Short answer: every one to two years.
If something significant has changed, sooner.
Your professional headshot is often the first impression someone has of you on LinkedIn, your company website, or marketing materials. If it no longer reflects how you look today, it may quietly be working against you.
When It’s Time for a New Headshot
You should update your headshot if:
• You changed roles or received a promotion
• Your company rebranded
• Your hair, style, or overall look has changed
• Your photo is more than two years old
• You feel hesitant about sending it out
If your image does not match the person someone meets in real life, it is time.
Why It Matters
An outdated headshot can affect credibility. In corporate environments, especially, trust and professionalism matter.
A current, polished image signals that you are active, confident, and aligned with your role.
Case in point, you can see the headshots I have used throughout my career below. The bottom right image is from 2010 (yes, I am still embarrassed that I used that as a professional image to represent myself) and the most recent two were taken in 2025 by Hughes Fioretti Photography. The proof is in the pudding. I update my own headshots about every two years, because I want my first impression to match who I am right now.
Clean lighting.
Natural expression.
Subtle retouching.
Timeless style.
Not overly edited. Not trendy. Not stiff.
Corporate Teams
For companies, consistent headshots across a team create a polished, unified presence. Many businesses update headshots every year or two to maintain brand consistency. Teams can come right to my studio at 122 s Main St., Algonquin, or I can come and set up on location at your office. As your team grows, you can send them right to my studio to get a matched studio headshot to what your brand has set up.
If You’re Local
If you are in Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Schaumburg, Barrington or the surrounding Chicago suburbs, updating your professional headshot can be simple and efficient.
If it has been more than two years, it is probably time.
